Avlonas

The ruins of the Sancutary of Artemis at Avlonas are located between Avlona Beach and a high promontory a kilometer north of modern Myrina, the main town of the Greek island of Lemnos. It was in continual use during the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods of ancient Greek history.

Like any sanctuary, the main building was its temple, dedicated of course to Artemis, the protector of the ancient city of Myrina. There were also other structures featuring rooms with other uses, including places for administrative duties and gatherings.

Tips for the Visitor
The site is located within the compound of the Porto Myrina 5-star hotel and resort, although it seems to be open to visitors from outside. The hotel is only open during the warmer months. We visited in April while they were preparing to open their season the following month, but we were able to visit and photograph the temple simply by ringing the doorbell and asking for permission to do so, although its unclear how many months of the year that would be possible.
